PARISHIONERS of St John the Baptist Church in Uddingston were joined by visiting priests and the family and friends of new deacon Richard Haggarty for his ordination mass.

Richard was ordained by the Rt Rev Joseph Devine, Bishop of Motherwell, to become the 11th permanent deacon in the Diocese of Motherwell.

Parish priest Father Dominic Towey welcomed and thanked Bishop Devine, the visiting priests and visitors from other churches, altar servers, Richard’s family and all who had helped in the preparations for what he said was a special occasion.

He said: “I am really delighted to see Richard ordained.

“I had the privilege of journeying with Richard over the past 13 years and he has become a close friend.

“I am sincerely delighted he has been appointed to this parish as he will be a great addition and I look forward to working with him.”

Richard will continue his work with Stella Maris as chaplain to the seamen in the Scottish ports as well as being a Deacon in the parish.

At a buffet reception after the ordination the parishioners joined Richard and his family and guests to give him their congratulations and good wishes.
