THIEVES caused £15,000 worth of damage by smashing up the roof of a Motherwell monument - to get their hands on lead worth just £100.

The historical mausoleum at St Patrick’s cemetery in Dalzell Estate had been restored with the help of Lottery funding just two years ago.

But handcrafted sandstone roof tiles have been destroyed by thieves desperate to get their hands on lead.

Police said the 20m of lead flashing would probably be sold for scrap at around £100.
