The Scottish Steel Task Force has announced its intention to cut in business rates for the Tata Steel sites at Dalzell and Clydebridge for one year.
The Scottish Government, which has invested £195,000 to keep key workers on standby, hopes the move will attract an alternative commercial operator.
Liberty House Group are among the firms said to be interested in purchasing the Motherwell and Cambuslang plants, but as yet no deal as been done.
Central Scotland list MSP Clare Adamson said: “Workers at Tata Steel will be encouraged by this step to ensure the sites remain an attractive option for commercial investment.
“This is positive action taken by the Scottish Government in supporting the task force to find a potential buyer for Dalzell and Clydebridge, working towards sustaining jobs and a viable future for this vital industry.”
