A NEWARTHILL man this week said he was devastated by an arson attack which killed his 53 racing pigeons - and admitted he was lucky to be alive.

Frank McMahon says he has been left shattered by the blaze which took place in the early hours of last Thursday morning which destroyed his pigeon loft containing the family of birds he had built up over over the past 24 years.

The 57-year-old believes he was deliberately targeted by whoever was responsible for the attack - but says he has no idea why.

It’s believed the fire was started when a wheelie bin was set alight and Frank’s car, parked a short distance away, was also set on fire.

As well as burning the pigeon loft in his garden to the ground and killing all the birds inside, the blaze also spread to his home in Ledi Path, extensively damaging his bedroom window and also damaged the house next door.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack and anyone with information should contact PC Henderson at Bellshill police office, tel 202400.
