A COURT has heard how more than 200 mourners marched behind the coffin of a prominent Orangeman despite councillors banning the funeral procession.

Motherwell Orange and Purple District 25 wanted to walk to Motherwell’s Airbles Cemetery after a funeral service for a member in the town centre.

North Lanarkshire Council refused permission after the police raised road safety concerns about the route.

But a senior police officer told Hamilton Sheriff Court the organiser was ‘adamant’ the march would go ahead, saying: “I can’t let these people down.”

Richard Maxwell denied committing an offence by organising the march without permission.
