COUNCILLORS have rejected controversial proposals to put up two new mobile phone masts in Bellshill and Mossend which attracted objections from hundreds of local residents.
Applications by o2 and Vodafone for planning permission to put up the masts in Lawmuir Road, Bellshill, a short distance from both Lawmuir Primary School and Orbiston Nursery School, and at Calder Road, Mossend, at the entrance to the Woodlands housing estate, were both refused on Tuesday by North Lanarkshire Council’s planning and transportation committee.
After a site visit officials recommended that the Lawmuir mast should be turned down on safety grounds, a recommendation accepted by the committee.
However they did recommend that the Calder Road mast should go ahead but this was overturned by councillors who voted to refuse consent on the grounds that the local amenity would be adversely affected.
