The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received a warm welcome when they visited Lanarkshire in July 1962 for a visit which included a tour of the Caterpillar factory in Tannochside.

The factory was opened in 1956 and employed 2,700 in its heyday but was closed in 1987 by the American company despite a campaign by its workforce of 1,200 who staged a sit-in against the closure decision which lasted 103 days before they were finally forced to admit defeat.
