CARING SIDE . . . young Gary Kelman has been nominated.

NOMINATIONS are coming in thick and fast for the inaugural Truth About Youth Awards 2011 but we still need your help to highlight the good work that young people are doing in Motherwell.

The Times & Speaker will be supporting the Truth About Youth Awards 2011 in the town’s Glo Centre on Tuesday, November 1, at 7pm to coincide with National Youth Work Week.

One young person who may be making a big impression on the night is Gary Kelman who has received a nomination for a citizenship award.

Gary (16) has used his experiences as a young carer to help others and create awareness of the demands that can be placed upon those within a caring role.

Through his involvement with the Young Carers Project and other youth initiatives, Gary with his peers helped develop a young person version of North Lanarkshire Council’s Integrated Children’s Services plan.

He was also involved in developing a DVD which is used to help young people have an understanding of children’s services and the Getting it Right for Every Child Agenda.

Last October, Gary led a group of young people to visit the Scottish Parliament to meet with Lord Jack McConnell to discuss young carer’s issues and the importance of recognising the impact that caring can have on them.

Listed are just some of this young person’s achievements proving that he has earned a deserved place amongst the nominations.

If you know someone like Gary, you still have until October 17 to return your nominations to Community Learning and Development.

Once nominations are received, a panel of adults and young people will meet to discuss who should make the shortlist for each award category.

Voting will then open via the Truth About Youth Awards website and the winner will be announced on the night of the final.

Nomination forms are available at our office on 29 Hope Street, Motherwell, ML1 1BT, and this should be returned to Truth About Youth awards, Community Learning and Development, Our Lady’s High School, Motherwell, ML1 2DG.

Please DO NOT send forms direct to the Motherwell Times office.

If any young person or member of the public would like to attend the awards, please contact Sean Hanlon on 01698 403830 or e-mail hanlons@northlan.gov.uk to reserve a ticket.
