More than 120 people braved the weather on Saturday as Newarthill’s oldest resident, Joe Mackie (103), turned on the Christmas tree lights.
This is the first time the village has had a Christmas tree for more than 50 years as the newly reformed community council seeks to foster community spirit.
Everyone then headed to the hall at Newarthill Parish Church for a sing-a-long, with carols led by a joint churches choir from St Teresa’s and Newarthill/Carfin and modern festive favourites by New Generation.
There was even a visit from Santa, to the delight of the youngsters.
Community council chairman Robert Paterson said: “Considering the weather it was a wonderful turnout and just the first step in our desire to bring the village closer together to revitalise its community spirit.”
