A mum is taking legal action against North Lanarkshire Council after being told her two children have to attend different primary schools.

Debbie Leyden was devastated when her placing request for son Keiran (4) to attend New Stevenston Primary when he starts school in August was rejected.

The council say the school is full and that they can’t accommodate Keiran - even though he already attends the nursery at New Stevenston Primary and big sister Kailey (7) is already a pupil there.

Debbie said: “Although New Stevenston is the closest school to my home, I am in the catchment area for Keir Hardie Primary.

“But Keiran already attends nursery at New Stevenston, based in the same building, and Kailey’s placing request was accepted last year.

“I am devastated. Their dad is in the Army and away regularly so I am going to have leave one child unattended while I drop the other one off.”
