Motherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland is keen to lay to rest the old chestnut that people only ever see politicians at election time.

Over the summer he carried out ‘roving’ surgeries across the area knocking on 1,000 doors to find out what issues concern constituents.

Mr Pentland said: “The issues raised on the doorstep are those which affect people most in their daily lives, not the ones which generate hot air in Holyrood, although several constituents did voice their concerns over separation from the rest of the UK.

“People with problems, whether it’s speeding cars, lack of GP services for the village, the economy or bedroom tax, want to know what the Scottish Government is doing now to address those problems.

“More specifically, many of these issues related to police matters, so for the last leg of these surgeries, I took the opportunity to invite Chief Inspector Glen Bland and Inspector Alistair Anderson from Wishaw Police Station, to accompany me during these surgeries.

“This was a chance for them to hear the residents’ concerns first hand and I know that many constituents valued this opportunity.”
