Central Scotland list MSP Siobhan McMahon has been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the new Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont.

The shadow ministerial position will see Miss McMahon attend Shadow Cabinet Meetings and support Ms Lamont in her role as Labour leader.

It also entails responsibility for engaging with organisations across Civic Scotland.

Miss McMahon said: “I firmly believe that Johann is the right person to take the Labour party forward in Scotland, and I am looking forward to supporting her in any way I can.”

Also in the reshuffle Motherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland has been appointed as Shadow Whip on Labour’s frontbench.

He said: “We have a difficult job to do, trying to keep a majority nationalist government in check.

“We need to win the arguments and get public pressure on our side.”

However, Uddingston and Bellshill MSP Michael McMahon has been replaced as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for local government and planning by Lothian list MSP Sarah Boyack, the former Minister for the Environment, Planning and Transport.

Mr McMahon says he told Ms Lamont prior to the leadership election that he didn’t wish to be considered for a cabinet position in order to pursue other interests.

He said: “I loved being in the cabinet, but I have constituency work, cross-party groups and other interests that I wanted more time to pursue and this seemed a good opportunity to do so.”
