A crane working on the M74 slipped down an embankment and crashed into an Uddingston garden yesterday (Wednesday).

The wooden fence which separates the new Springfield Estate from the motorway put up little resistance.

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The contractor, Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP), has confirmed that a piling rig positioned near the B756 Bellshill Road, Uddingston, within the construction site boundary, became unstable and turned on its side.

“No serious injuries were sustained, emergency services were in attendance and a full investigation into the cause of the incident is now underway.”

Last year the PTA at St John the Baptist Primary, which located around half a mile from the site of the incident, complained there was an inadequate boundary fence between the school and the motorway.
