Residents in Bellshill have won their fight to persuade councillors to turn down controversial proposals for an international railfreight park near their homes.
Mossend Railhead operators PD Stirling’s application for planning permission for a huge expansion of the Bellshill facility was rejected on Monday by North Lanarkshire Council.
The firm said their plans would create 2,700 jobs - plus another 2,200 during the construction phase - and provide a massive boost to the local economy.
But more than 1,200 objections were lodged by local residents who claimed the scheme would have an unacceptably detrimental effect on their quality of life.
