Bellshill Central Church has received a new lease of life to go with its new identity after being redecorated last month.

Earlier this year the Mears branch in North Lanarkshire received a call for help from the church’s session clerk, Stanley Cook.

He explained the church - formerly MacDonald Memorial Church - is the heart of the community, but over time has become very tired.

Mr Cook hoped Mears would be able to support the church by helping with some redecorating.

Mears staff in North Lanarkshire were only too happy to help and in June painter Derek Ross and apprentice painter Scott Carruthers spent three and a half days redecorating the ground floor.

They knew how important it was to do a fantastic job as the church plays a vital role in the community being used by many different groups including Guides, Brownies, the Bellshill Probus Club and the Carpet Bowling Club.

Once the painting was completed everyone was pleased with the result and felt that it had made the church brighter and more inviting.

Mr Cook said: “On behalf of the congregation I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mears and their staff for the excellent work which has been carried out to the interior of our church.

“The redecoration of the interior has completely transformed the appearance of the church and both young and old are delighted, everyone has commented on the quality of the workmanship.

“We are indebted to Mears for their help and kindness.”

On Thursday councillors Jimmy Coyle, Harry McGuigan, David Baird and Frank McNally visited the church to see the transformation. They met Mr Cook and church property convener Drew Aitken.

Mears was represented on by managing director Willie Docherty, business director Steve Kelly and union convener Mick Farrell as well as Derek and Scott.

Mr Docherty said: “As a business we are committed to supporting our local communities and developing our apprentices.

”The chance to redecorate the Bellshill Central Church gave us a perfect opportunity to support our local community and provide one of our apprentices with valuable experience.

”We are very proud of the work carried out by Derek and Scott, it was a big job and the result is fantastic.

”We hope that the congregation, local groups and the community will be able to enjoy the transformation for many years to come.”
