A MOTHERWELL sailor is one step closer to a career at sea after completing his initial naval training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwell.

Trainee engineering technician Matthew McCreadie (20) joined the Royal Navy in June and has now completed a 10 week intensive course.

The course is designed to give recruits the basic skills they will rely upon throughout their careers and it culminates in the passing-out-parade when Matthew and his fellow recruits marched out before their families and friends.

The former Dalziel High School pupil, who previously worked as a baker, said: “I joined the Royal Navy to constantly challenge myself and push myself to the limits. This course has been the hardest, but also the best thing I have ever done.”

With the first phase of his training complete, Matthew’s next port of call is HMS Sultan in Hampshire.

There he will learn the skills in mechanical engineering required to keep the ships of the Royal Navy running at the peak of operational effectiveness.
