MSP Richard Lyle this week backed Nicola Sturgeon’s bid to succeed Alex Salmond as party leader.
The Deputy First Minister formally announced her decision to stand last week and Mr Lyle, Central Scotland list MSP, pledged his support.
He said: “I actually emailed the First Minister Alex Salmond on Friday September 19 thanking him for taking our party to such heights. I also said that I look forward to serving under him for the rest of the parliament.
“Alex later that day took the decision to stand down as party leader. In the 48 years I have been a member of the SNP I have served under many party leaders and in those years I have known and met Nicola Sturgeon on many occasions.
“I feel that she has excellent qualities and the capability to serve Scotland and the Scottish people in the role of First Minister.
“I am sure she will build upon the work of past leaders of the party and will also work together with other parties to ensure that Scotland gets what it was promised during the referendum.”
