Youths not saved by the Bell in night of action

ACTION . . . officers targeted several areas.

MORE than 30 youngsters were apprehended by police during an operation aimed at combating youth disorder and anti-social behaviour.

Operation Bell, put into action on Friday night, saw officers target areas at New Stevenston Road and Bell Quadrant, Carfin; Spruce Way, Holytown, and Carfin Street, New Stevenston.

The areas were identified after numerous calls from members of the public with complaints such as fire raising, noise, disorder and drinking.

Area Commander at Bellshill, Chief Inspector Rosie Wright, said: “Anti-social behaviour and youth disorder not only causes great distress to communities, but also often leads to fighting and other acts of violence and the carrying of offensive weapons.

“Much of the disorder and anti-social behaviour is linked to alcohol and / or drugs.

“Extra attention has been given to specific areas in New Stevenston, Carfin and Holytown where youths congregate and cause annoyance to local residents.

“A robust approach was required as many of the young people hanging around in the identified areas have already been spoken to by officers.”
