A Motherwell youth caught with drugs while he was on bail for a serious assault has been locked up for 14 months.

Police seized a bag from Daryl Reid containing heroin and diazepam tablets with a total value of more than £6,000, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard. Digital scales were also in the bag.

Reid (20), of Mason Street, admitted having both drugs with intent to supply others in McClurg Court, Motherwell, on May 20 last year.

He also admitted punching and kicking Sean Egan outside Asda in Motherwell in the early hours of September 24 2012.

Referring to the drugs charge, Barry Dunne, prosecuting, said police officers spotted Reid with another youth. Mr Dunne told the court: “They seemed to stop in their tracks when they saw the police. Reid tried to pass a bag to the other person.”

Sheriff Ray Small told Reid, who was represented by solicitor Diarmid Bruce, that his guilty pleas had saved him from a 21-month sentence.
