A group of 15 young carers used catering and hospitality skills learned at Motherwell College to make lunch for 40 invited guests
The group, aged 14-17 from Action for Children Scotland’s young carers service in North Lanarkshire, gave up their October break to attend a week-long workshop at the college.
They learned about food hygiene, healthy eating and menu planning and in just four days devised a menu for the ‘Come Dine with Us’ event which included curried coconut chicken, smoked salmon and blueberry crumble cheesecake.
Emma Taylor (15), from Motherwell, said: “I have had a great week learning to cook. I was in charge of puddings and I really enjoyed making the cheesecake and shortbread.
“I cook a lot for my little brother and used to do easy frozen meals. Now I have learned about health and hygiene and I will be making more healthy choices from now on.”
James Cantley, operational director of children’s services at Action for Children Scotland, said: “The young people all had a great week at Motherwell College. They have learned a lot and I am very impressed by the meal they produced.”
The Come Dine with Us event was organised by Action for Children Scotland in partnership with the Herbalife Family Foundation and Motherwell College.
Chef lecturer Russell Hands said: “This is the third year I have been involved with the young carer’s group and it is one of the most rewarding projects I have ever been involved with.
“To see these young people within a week being capable of cooking and serving a meal for 40 people is a remarkable achievement.”
