Xmas day blaze destroys Newarthill store
THE owner of Newarthill's award-winning post office this week told how he was devastated at the loss of his store after it was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day — but has pledged to rebuild it if he can.
The Spar store in Carfin Road was gutted by the fire which broke out shortly before 8pm.
At the height of the blaze more than 60 firefighters were in attendance and it took them almost three hours to bring the fire under control.
The exact cause of the blaze has still to be confirmed, but it is suspected that it began after a bread basket outside the shop was set alight.
The shop had been open on Christmas Day, but closed around 5pm and was empty at the time the fire started.
Owner Manny Hussain said: "I am devastated — there's just nothing left of the shop at all.
"It's still sinking in but I want to rebuild if I can. I'm determined that no-one will beat me."
