Work starts on park
WORK on improving leisure facilities in Duchess of Hamilton Park will begin next month.
The Times & Speaker had previously reported that the installation of an astroturf pitch and a wheeled sports area would take place at the end of February.
However, the discovery of a sewage pipe, which had been missed on maps of the area, meant Scottish Water had to be called in to investigate and deal with a build up of silt.
As a result contractors Bendcrete were unable to carry out the £90,000 project and North Lanarkshire Council were forced to wait for the company’s diary to open up.
This week local regeneration manager Michele Battersby was advised that work will likely begin on Monday, July 9, and is expected to last five weeks.
When completed the park will boast an astroturf pitch with goals and basketball hoops near the Avon Street entrance as well as a wheeled sports area for skateboaring, rollerblading and BMX bikes on the site of the old bandstand.
Ms Battersby said: “It is unfortunate there was a sewage pipe we didn’t know about and we missed our slot with Bendcrete so all we could do was wait for another one to open up.
“The contractor Bendcrete have now confirmed to play services they will be on site by July 9, but possibly one week earlier dependent on the weather.
“Build time should be about five weeks and when the concrete is laid it will be float finished and set straight away – hopefully avoiding any graffiti efforts.”
The £90,000 project will be partially funded by a Community Payback grant.
