IT was top marks all round for Holy Family Primary in Mossend when they received the results of their Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of education (HMIe) report.

The inspectors’ visit took place towards the end of June and the school received a mark of ‘very good’ in all five quality indicators - improvements in performance, learners’ experiences, meeting learning needs, the curriculum and improvement through self-evaluation.

Further key strengths of the school were: polite, motivated children who are achieving very well in and beyond the classroom; reflective staff who embrace and implement change for the benefit of children; strong leadership provided by the headteacher and her depute; caring community of faith working closely with its parents and parish; and wide ranging high quality partnerships which greatly enhance children’s learning.

The inspectors were also pleased with the children’s experiences outwith the classroom which included working in the school garden, participating in sporting events, in choirs and school shows and in speech and drama competitions.

Inspector Mairi Timmons was full of praise for how headteacher Elaine Johnston runs the school and the impact she has had on improving the work of her staff.

She said: “The headteacher provides very strong leadership for the continuous improvement of the school.

“Together with her depute headteacher, she has developed a very caring supportive ethos but one which is based on very high expectations for children’s learning and achievement.

“Staff share these high expectations and regularly reflect on how to improve their classroom practice.”

The inspectors discussed with staff and North Lanarkshire Council how they might continue to improve the school and nursery class.

It was agreed to continue to develop the school in line with Curriculum for Excellence to ensure children are progressing their knowledge and skills across all curricular areas and to further develop approaches to assessing, recording and tracking children’s achievement with increased opportunity for moderation of standards.

Ms Timmons added: “We are satisfied with the overall quality of provision and are confident that the school’s self-evaluation processes are leading to improvements.

“As a result, we will make no further visits in connection with this inspection. The local authority will inform parents about the school’s progress as part of the authority’s arrangements for reporting to parents on the quality of its schools.”

Christine Pollock, executive director of learning and leisure services, praised the school for achieving such a positive report.

She said: “Everyone associated with the school should be very proud. It’s a highly positive reflection of all the good work taking place within Holy Family Primary.”
