COMMUNICATIONS firm Virgin Media has announced an employment boost for the Bellshill area with the creation of 60 new jobs at its base in Strathclyde Business Centre.

The firm says it is having to take on the extra workers to cope with growing consumer demand for its television and broadband services.

Virgin Media’s Bellshill customer contact centre already employs 750 staff and the additional jobs will be advertised over the coming weeks.

Virgin Media’s chief operating officer Andrew Barron announced the new jobs as he toured the Bellshill site and said both Virgin Media and Virgin Media Business were seeking to further develop business north of the Border and believed the workforce in Scotland to be both highly skilled and experienced.

He added: “In what is a challenging economic time for many, we’re pleased we are able to invest further and offer more people the prospect of an exciting and rewarding career at the forefront of next generation entertainment and communications.

“By creating more opportunities, we will be able to meet the sustained appetite for TiVo and superfast broadband.

“With this expansion Virgin Media will continue to support the Scottish Government’s ambitions for the country. We’re investing in the very communities we serve to ensure all our customers get the experience they expect from us.”

The news was welcomed by Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill MP Tom Clarke after he toured the centre with senior Virgin Media employees.

He said: “The 60 new jobs is great news for the area and this further investment is a testament to the skills and experience available locally.

“The facility at Bellshill is impressive and it is encouraging to hear that the company has ambitious plans for the future and is committed to doing more to help people in Bellshill, Scotland and the UK make the most of the digital world.”

Uddingston and Bellshill MSP Michael McMahon added: “In a challenging economic climate when some difficult decisions are being made across the country it is good to see Virgin Media continue to invest in Bellshill.”
