UDDINGSTON put on a blooming great show when the Beautiful Scotland judges visited the village last week to judge its entry into this year’s competition.

The village is hoping to add to its long list of Scottish and British accolades by once again enjoying success in the competition’s urban community category.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Motherwell next month.

And without being complacent the Uddingston Pride group, which spearheads the village’s annual campaign, were pleased with judges’ comments on their overall impression of the village.

Uddingston Pride chairperson Liz Wilson said the judges seemed particularly pleased at the efforts of the after-school club at Uddingston Baptist Church.

She said: “The children showed their plants and explained the differences between the flowers and the vegetables they were growing at the church grounds.

“The colourful display at St John the Baptist Church. where they meet Father Towie, was commented on and also the station.

“The judges asked lots of questions about the input from the residents but did not give too much away and we now have to wait until September for the results.

“The awards ceremony will take place in Motherwell and is being hosted by North Lanarkshire Council whose input was appreciated. South Lanarkshire Council and their teams also worked very hard to ensure the village looked at its best.

“Thanks are also due to the volunteers who turned out in large numbers for our clean-up parties. Residents on our tour route made sure that their gardens were looking at their best so it really was great joint effort.

“We have won the competition on a number of occasions previously but we are aware that we need to keep improving to maintain the gold standard.”
