Viewpark man leaves lasting legacy for kids

A VIEWPARK man who died 15 months ago has left a lasting legacy to help children in poverty-stricken Malawi.

A kitchen has been built in memory of Robert Swan in the village of Chichiri.

Robert raised the money after being diagnosed with a brain tumour because he wanted to do something worthwhile with his time after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Robert was diagnosed in 1996 at the age of just 21 and was given the shattering news that he wasn't expected to survive any longer than a year.

But, with the help of his own courage and faith and the support of his family, he confounded those predictions by living for another 12 years.

He eventually passed away in November 2008, aged 33, but not before he had ensured a lasting legacy for the people of Chichiri.

Robert had become aware of the work done by the Mary's Meals project set up in 2002 with the aim of providing children in Malawi with a daily meal.

His efforts helped to raise a total of 7,000 which included a 3,500 donation from Robert himself, a total of 1,000 which was collected at his funeral in St Columba's in Viewpark, and a further 2,500 to ensure the final total was reached.

And the fundraising efforts are still continuing in his memory – a charity night held at Burnhead Bowling Club raised a further 2,800 for Mary's Meals.
