VIEWPARK will stage its first gala day in almost a quarter of a century on Saturday with a host of activities which the organisers hope will bring the community together to enjoy a fun-filled family day.

Most of the activities will take place in and around the original gala day park behind Burnhead District Hall, following the parade and crowning ceremony at noon.

However the day’s activities will actually kick off at 9am with the Viewpark Gala Day Football Festival at Tannochside Primary School

The parade will leave the Viewpark Community Education Centre at 11am, arriving at Burnhead Community Centre around 11.30.

The welcoming and coronation ceremony will begin at noon with the crowning of this year’s queen, Tannochside Primary pupil Lauren McCluskey, appropriately being carried out by Michelle Collins, who was Gala Queen for the last Viewpark Gala in 1988.

Trophies for the winners of the morning football festival will then be presented before the day gets under way in earnest with a host of festivities.

The day will feature live entertainment on the performance stage, such as ‘Move It Dance’, ‘CM Dance’ and a Tai Chi display, all in addition to live music throughout the whole day.

SPORTS

There will be a variety of free sports coaching sessions on the sports fields with contributions from the Scottish Rugby Union, Motherwell Football Club and Scottish Netball Association.

There will also be a variety of rides and attractions, with bands being sold, based upon height , at £5 and £8, for unlimited rides on all attractions as a mean of keeping costs down. Attractions will include Laser Quest, Quad Bikes, Rodeo Bull, Water Balls, Bungee Run and all the fun of the fair.

And a huge variety of stalls, including chocolatiers, face painters and a variety of information stalls with a tonne of freebies, will also add to the fun. Local MSYP Jordan Linden will be the master of ceremonies.

Gala day committee secretary Sharon Swan said: “Everyone on the organising committee has worked so hard to make this happen and hopefully it can once again become an annual event.

“Now all that’s left is to hope that as many people as possible come out to support it - and that we get good weather.”
