Tribute to Viewpark missionary
TRIBUTE has been paid after the death of a priest from Viewpark who spent much of his life working as a missionary in Africa.
Fr James Brown, who died aged 68, was a pupil at Our Lady's High School in Motherwell, leaving at 15 to join the Holy Ghost Fathers.
He studied initially at the missionary order's house in Uddingston and his studies for the priesthood continued in France and England, before leaving for his first mission to Nigeria in 1965.
He would return to Nigeria many times over the years despite civil war and tribal unrest, and even went back when he was first diagnosed with cancer.
Following the death of his mother, he re-joined the Holy Ghost Fathers community in Carfin where he lived until his death.
Hi friend Desmond Gilpin said: "He was genuine, true and exceedingly loyal. His affections for his friends and family were seen in his deep interest and care for them.
"And he was a very generous man, giving himself to others both here and in Nigeria. When he could no longer be in Nigeria he still gave support, as much as he could, whenever he could."
