Town centre works progressing well
ENVIRONMENTAL improvement work on Muir Street and Hamilton Road in Motherwell has now reached 45 per cent as the latest phase of the scheme began last week.
Repaving at the station forecourt, west side of Muir Street and south side of Merry Street are now complete while most of the road surface has now been removed from Muir Street between the junction with Hamilton Road and the station.
Contractors Maclay are now digging up the pavement on the north side of Hamilton Road between the junction of Muir Street and High Road.
Repaving will be carried out in the evenings and weekends to allow the businesses to remain open and is expected to take around four or five weeks, although it is hoped could be finished before the Glasgow Fair on July 2.
After that the east side of Muir Street will be done in a similar fashion which is estimated to take around six or seven weeks.
Like the west side of the street the work involves the removal of the double kerb and once this is done the entire stretch of road from the station to the junction with West Hamilton Street can be tarmaced.
It has been suggested that the same monoblocking used in Pollock Street would be used to promote an overall aesthetic, but it was decided that as the road would be much busier it was more practical just to use tarmac.
Once this has been done the traffic island in West Hamilton Street will be resurfaced, which will mean the crossing being closed for a fortnight, and then finally all the street furniture will be installed.
North Lanarkshire Council’s senior planning officer Lorna Ogilvie said: “Phase four of nine has just been started within this scheme and although the contractors are still working to a December finishing date arguably they are ahead.
“At present I’d say it’s about 45 per cent done and while, of course, a lot depends on the weather we get over the summer, if it is reasonably good then I see no reason they shouldn’t keep up the momentum.
“The south side of Merry Street was scheduled to take six or seven weeks, but in reality took less than four.
“If the same time is cut off paving in Hamilton Road and Muir Street then I would hope that things will be finished long before December.”
