WHAT NOW? . . . players and officials from St Columbas Boys Club are waiting to see what the future holds.
A LONG-ESTABLISHED football club in Viewpark has voiced fears it could be forced to fold if plans to build a new Asda store in the area are given the go-ahead.
And the plan to build a new supermarket and petrol station at a site in Laburnum Road has also sparked road safety concerns due to the proximity of a primary school and nursery.
Asda last week announced a £14 million investment involving the construction of a 25,000 sq ft supermarket which would bring 200 jobs with a further 200 created during construction.
A Proposal of Application Notice has been formally lodged with North Lanarkshire Council by developers Macdonald Estates, notifying of its intention to submit a planning application for a supermarket on the site.
But part of the site is currently occupied by St Columba’s Boys’ Club’s pavilion and a football pitch the club - whose ‘old boys’ include Celtic and Scotland legend Jimmy Johnstone - uses for training.
Giving the Asda plan the green light would mean the club having to look for new premises and training facilities - and club officials are concerned that no arrangements for this have been put in place.
Club president Steve Solman said: “If we were now to be left without event a hall or training facility in Viewpark I would really fear for the future of the club. Will it mean the end for St Columba’s?”
Local councillor Bob Burrows said he was sympathetic to the club’s concerns, but was even more worried about the implications for users of nearby John Paul II Primary School and Viewpark Nursery.
He said: ““The car park at the St Columba’s is used as an overspill by parents and the area is already a very busy one.
“A supermarket the size of Asda would bring increased volumes of traffic and while the developers have suggested that extra spaces will be made available in their car park to make up for the loss of existing parking, there will still be many more vehicles using the roads around the school.”
