PUPILS and staff at Uddingston Grammar are celebrating after the school scooped a top national award for their work on environmental projects.

The school was crowned winner of the inaugural ScottishPower Green Energy Trust Eco Editors competition established to encourage awareness of environmental issues and green projects amongst secondary school pupils.

To become an ‘Eco Editor’ schools had to tell the trust of their green experience or environmentally friendly suggestions which schools across the UK could implement to help save the planet.

Uddingston Grammar was chosen for its ‘Bee Project’ which focussed on the fall in the number of bees and the effect that this can have on the world’s food population.

Pupils sowed wild flower seed on an embankment next to the school to create a habitat for the complex and necessary insects.

They also bought wild flower seed, packaged it in small bags and sold it to staff and pupils in the school and then put the money raised towards buying enough to seed the bund.

The success of this venture encouraged the school to introduce an S1 interdisciplinary project on bees as part of the Curriculum for Excellence and in the space of one week many departments in the school, including geography, maths, science, English, modern studies and art had subject related lessons on bees.

Headteacher John McKay said: “Our staff and pupils have put in a great amount of hard work into the Bee Project over the course of the year and we strongly believe that it has made our students more aware of the importance of protecting the environment and inspired them to come up with more eco-friendly ideas.”
