Tackling anti-social behaviour

A NEW working group is to be set up by North Lanarkshire Council to identify the best ways to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.

The working group will include elected members, officers from relevant services within the council and representatives from Strathclyde Police and will also consult with residents and other partners.

Councillor Sam Love, convener of the housing and social work committee, said: “Anti-social behaviour is an issue that causes real concern for many residents, young and old alike, and can have a very negative impact on communities.

“Whether its vandalism, graffiti, noise nuisance from neighbours or racial harassment, we know from our residents survey how important it is to people that we tackle these issues.

“We already have staff in each local housing team providing practical help and support to residents who experience anti-social behaviour. They work closely with the community police teams, registered social landlords and elected members to protect the communities they work in, and this partnership approach is working well.

“However, we now want to use all our experience and take a fresh look at what further steps we can take to deal with anti-social behaviour across North Lanarkshire.”

Anyone with a problem with anti-social behaviour during the day can contact their local housing office, while help is available in the evenings or weekends from specially trained staff operating a 24/7 emergency telephone service on 01698 403222.

The council’s efficient government and service delivery team, in conjunction with housing services, has carried out a review of how anti-social behaviour is currently managed by all the agencies involved, and their findings will help inform the working group.
