Steel memorial campaign gets planning boost

The campaign to set up a permanent memorial to Scotland’s steelworkers has taken a major step forward with the granting of formal planning permission to erect it on the site of the former Ravenscraig steel plant.
North Lanarkshire Council has approved the application from the Scottish Steelworkers Memorial Fund to erect the memorial as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the industry.
The campaign, and appeal for financial contributions, was launched towards the end of last year under the auspices of the Supercounty civic pride organisation and has received widespread support from all political parties, business and schools as well as the backing of the Times and Speaker.
The steel industry provided a livelihood for thousands of people in the area over many years and in return their efforts ensured Lanarkshire steel was a product renowned for its quality the world over.
Council leader Jim McCabe met fund representatives last week and has warmly welcomed the project.
He said: “From my own personal experience, having lost a relative, I know how important it is to remember those who lost their lives working in the steel industry and fully support the campaign.”
The area’s schools have also become involved in the project with Dalziel High School following Braidhurst in making a financial contribution to the fund.
Headteacher Robert Birch said: “There are many pupils at the school who come from families with a steelmaking background and it is very important that we know about our heritage and recognise it as something we should be proud of.”
