AN angry councillor has blasted North Lanarkshire Council for not doing enough to help find a new permanent home for junior football side Bellshill Athletic.

Bellshill councillor and MSP Richard Lyle says the council has dragged its feet during negotiations with the club which has been homeless since being forced out of the now disused New Brandon Park stadium owned by former club boss Steven McGhee in 2009.

Since then a wide variety of sites have been discussed - including pitches at Bothwellhaugh, Rockburn Park, Sandy Park, Bellshill Academy, Orbiston Bing, Calder Road in Mossend next to Holy Family and even Watling Street in Motherwell - without any agreement being reached.

Now another pitch in Calder Road, near its junction with Motherwell Road, is being looked at - and Councillor Lyle said that if it proves suitable then all stops should be pulled out to ensure the club, currently sharing a ground with Glasgow side Vale of Clyde, can return home.
