Society launched to honour Keir Hardie

THE Keir Hardie Society was officially launched on Sunday, August 15, birth date of Newhouse-born James Keir Hardie, who became the founder of the Labour Party.

There was a large turnout for the event at Summerlee Heritage Park in Coatbridge which was chaired by Hugh Gaffney of NLTUC.

He said: "As part of the steering group I was delighted and honoured to be asked to chair this special event to launch a society to a man who was not only known for his politics but also his trade union work and his socialist christianity."

Honorary president Tony Benn was unable to attend due to family commitments but sent congratulations to the steering group on the launch of a the society.

North Lanarkshire Council depute provost Jim Robertson gave a civic welcome to the society and congratulated the steering group members for their good work in recognising what Keir Hardie had done.
