Messages of support for doomed Eddie in Thorndean Crescent, Bellshill.

A Bellshill man has joined his wife in being banned from owning a dog for five years.

Last month Margaret Meekison (42) was handed a five-year ban and a sheriff ordered that her pet, Eddie, a large South African Boerboel, be destroyed.

She admitted the dog was dangerously out of control outside her home in Thorndean Crescent last May. Eddie jumped repeatedly on a woman and bit her, and also attacked a police officer.

Meekison returned to Hamilton Sheriff Court with her husband, David (43). They were found guilty of allowing Eddie to be dangerously out of control on October 5.

On that occasion a woman was bitten outside the couple’s home.

As well as banning David Meekison from owning a dog, Sheriff Thomas Millar ordered the pair to do 150 hours of unpaid work within a year.

A death sentence was passed on the dog despite the efforts of supporters who daubed ‘Free Eddie’ slogans on buildings in the area.
