BOTHWELL is gearing up for its second scarecrow festival this weekend - with the organisers hoping it will prove even more popular than last year’s overwhelmingly successful inaugural event.

The festival will be spread over four days, kicking off tomorrow (Thursday) with an opening ceremony at Bothwell Pastoral Centre at which pupils from the village’s two primary schools - St Bride’s and Bothwell - will be making scarecrows.

A load of scarecrows have been appearing over the past few weeks in all parts of Bothwell and organsisers have arranged a wide variety of concerts, exhibtions and other activities - many of which are already sold out - at various venues throughout the village.

These include a comedy night at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel on Thursday, a scarecrow making workshop at Bothwell Library on Friday, a schools’ concert at St Bride’s Primary School, also on Friday, and a variety of outdoor activites at Woodean Park on Saturday.

But main event of the festival will take place on Sunday with the parade of scarecrows from Gilchrist Gardens to Wooddean Park, followed by a host of fun activites for all the family.

Organising committee chairman Harry Marsh said: “We have the Drakes of Hazard back by popular demand, Chinese dancers, a community market and a number of the sports clubs, such as tennis and golf, have got together to organise taster sessions.

“We also have exhibitions and loads of other events taking place throughout the four days so we’re hopeful that we can be even more successful than we were last year.”

For a full round-up and picture special on the festival see next week’s Motherwell Times or Bellshill Speaker.
