Save our school

ANGRY parents have vowed to fight a plan by North Lanarkshire Council to shut Calder Primary School in Motherwell next summer.

The proposal to shut the 105-year-old school as part of a cost-cutting exercise was revealed last week with officials proposing that pupils be relocated to either Muir Street Primary or Glencairn Primary.

The plan, which will be considered by councillors at a leisure and learning committee meeting on October 1, also proposes the closure of Calder’s nursery class with provision relocated ’elsewhere in the Motherwell area.’

As part of the consultation process a public meeting will be held at Braidhurst High School on Wednesday, October 24.

But a number of parents have already contacted the Times & Speaker via e-mail, our website or Facebook page to voice their opposition.

Karen McKinstry said that within 24 hours of the news closure plan being revealed more than 40 parents gathered outside the school to discuss how to fight it.

She said: “It just doesn’t make sense - they say the children will get a better standard of education if this goes through but I don’t believe that’s the case.

“Glencairn and Muir Street are already busy enough - how are they going to cope with all the children they are going to get from Calder?

“The Glencairn parents don’t want this, the Muir Street parents don’t want it and the Calder parents certainly don’t want it.

“There’s always a fear that they are just going through the motions by having a consultation and that the decision has already been taken.

“But I couldn’t sleep at night if I didn’t do everything I could to oppose it and I know other parents feel the same way.”
