Residents outraged by plans for medical centres

PROTESTORS are to form an action group to fight plans to sell off a park in Uddingston as the site for a new medical surgery.

Villagers are angry at the decision by South Lanarkshire Council's estates committee to approve the lease of part of Crofthead Park to developers building a new base for the Lincluden medical practice.

And an open meeting will be held at Uddingston Community Centre on Monday, July 12, at 7.30pm to allow members of the public to have their say and draw up plans to fight the proposal.

The lease of the land – described in the report to committee as a site at Crofthead Street/The Cut, rather than as a park – was agreed on the casting vote of convener Jim Docherty after a tied 8-8 vote.

The deal agreed will lease the land to Blantyre developers Alexander Braidwood & Sons for 174 years in exchange for a nominal annual rent of 1 plus a one-off payment of 210,000.

But one resident involved in setting up the new protest group said: "This is the only bit of green space left in the centre of the village and everyone is up in arms about this proposal. We feel the surgery has to look at alternative sites."

Alexander Braidwood and Sons were also given permission to build a new medical centre in Bothwell have also been given the green light from South Lanarkshire Council.

The Times & Speaker reported back in March that plans to build on Clyde Terrace had angered environmentalists.

The council report states: "Bothwell Medical Practice are outgrowing their existing premises in Uddingston Road, Bothwell, therefore, requires to relocate to larger purpose built facilities."

The move has infuriated members of the Brighter Bothwell group, who had opposed the plans from the outset.

A spokesman for the group said: "The existing premises could be extended on either side - by purchasing adjacent brownfield land - or another storey could be added."
