Residents call foul over playpark on doorstep

ANGRY residents of a Motherwell street say they could be forced to move away if a playpark is built across the road from their homes.

North Lanarkshire Council wants to provide a massive facility for children up to 16, including traditional playground equipment as well as areas for skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters.

However, people living in nearby Magna Street are warning it will be a magnet for troublemakers and a waste of money at a time when huge cuts are being made to other council services.

The council has applied for planning permission to develop its land next to St Bernadette’s Primary School.

It says the Magna Street park would create a ‘stimulating, safe play environment’, but residents disagree and have registered objections.

John McCafferty, who handed in a petition from residents, said: “The council should use the money for an indoor playpark with opening and closing times that would create jobs.”

The issue will go to the council planning committee for a decision.
