Repeat knife offender ‘not violent’
A MOTHERWELL man caught with a weapon for a third time isn’t a violent person, his lawyer has claimed.
Dennis Speedie (35), a prisoner, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted having a knife in Airbles Street, Motherwell, on October 15.
Barry Dunne, prosecuting, said police officers went to the area about 8pm to deal with a disturbance.
Speedie was there but left the scene, returning a short time later. A member of the public then told officers that Speedie had left something in a cavity in a nearby wall.
A knife with a three-inch blade was recovered.
Speedie, who had an injury, was taken to hospital for treatment before being arrested.
Defence agent Elspeth Forrest admitted Speedie had two convictions for similar crimes, but pointed out that most of his record involved crimes of dishonesty.
Mrs Forrest told the court: “He is not a violent man and seems to be more of a nuisance.
“He has a drink problem. He was drinking that night, there was an incident and he picked up this knife.”
Sheriff Ray Small reduced the jail sentence from 21 months to 14 because Speedie had pleaded guilty early.
The sheriff told him: “You have a lengthy record, but most of it is relatively minor.”
