A violent offender is back behind bars after he was caught with a phone in his cell at a high-security jail shortly before his release.

Kyle McCusker (26), of Woodside Street, New Stevenston, got six years for attempted murder at the High Court in 2008. He then had four years added to that for a knife robbery committed while on bail.

He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he admitted unlawfully having a mobile phone at Shotts Prison on August 22 last year.

McCusker, whose other sentences had ended, was jailed for 145 days for the latest offence.

His solicitor, Diarmid Bruce, told the court: “He got the phone from another inmate because a family member was not well and he wanted to keep in contact.”

More on this story and other court news in the Times & Speaker, out on Wednesday.
