A Motherwell Post Office that has served its community for many decades is set to shut, with services moving to a nearby Spar store.
The proposed revamp would see North Motherwell Post Office at 197 The Loaning closing down in favour of a franchised operation at the nearby Spar store at 148 Logans Road.
Similar plans have already been announced for Post Office branches in Muirhouse and, controversially, in New Stevenston - where hundreds of local people signed a petition against the plan.
The Post Office says the proposed move from The Loaning would make its services available for longer, offering greater convenience to customers.
If the move goes ahead, the branch would open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 8am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday and 8am to 5pm on Sunday - 31 hours more per week than at present.
Critics say the scheme is aimed purely at saving money and that the Post Office should be in specific premises, not shops.
However, the Post Office says the plan underpins its commitment to ensuring no more branch closures.
Post Office regional network manager for Scotland and Northern England Suzanne Richardson said: “We understand how important Post Office services are to residents in North Motherwell and we are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”
Post Office Ltd says it welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like considered before a final decision is taken on the proposal.
