BELLSHILL Academy lost a very familiar face when senior pupil Elliot Shepka walked out of the school for the last time this week.
For in his six years there he didn’t miss a single day - and that followed seven years of perfect attendance at Mossend Primary School.
Elliot (17), of Neptune Way, Mossend, received an award to mark the outstanding achievement at the Academy prizegiving last week.
He was spurred on by the example of older brother Nathan who also went through six years at secondary school without absence.
Elliot was modest about his perfect record, saying: “I just didn’t have a reason to be off school. My mum, Jacqueline, was more concerned than we were about our perfect attendance. I got colds but nothing so major that I couldn’t go in to school and I was lucky not to catch anything like chickenpox.”
Elliot, who keeps fit playing badminton, says the secret to his good health could be a regular intake of Vitamin C.
He passed five Highers at A and B level last year and is now waiting for this summer’s exam results, having sat two advanced Highers and two Highers.
He plans to study applied chemistry or chemical engineering at Strathclyde University and hopes his attendance record will help him when he’s looking for a job in years to come.
And his advice to the pupils he’s leaving behind? “Don’t use any old bad excuse - you really should have a valid reason for staying off school.”
