North Lanarkshire residents are urged to recycle food waste

HOUSEHOLDS in the Motherwell, Bellshill and Wishaw areas have been provided with special containers as part of a new North Lanarkshire Council food waste recycling initiative.

The council’s weekly food waste collection in Motherwell, Bellshill, Viewpark, Wishaw, Harthill, Shotts and surrounding villages started this week.

Each house will receive a starter pack of a small indoor caddy and a larger outdoor caddy, an initial supply of liners and an information leaflet which explains how to use the new system and when the kerbside caddy will be collected.

Environmental services committee convener Councillor Helen McKenna said she hoped residents would find the new service useful and easy to use.

She said: “You can dispose of any kind of food waste, including cooked or raw food, which is then recycled to create a fertiliser used by farmers.

“So it means we can put more of our waste to a good use instead of it being dumped in landfill.

“Local residents are already helping us achieve good rates of recycling household rubbish and this new service will mean we will divert more waste from landfill, which helps the environment and saves money in landfill tax.”

In developing the food waste recycling system, the council has received support from Zero Waste Scotland, including good practice guidance and evidence of system types which work well elsewhere and funding to buy the caddies and liners.

The food waste recycling service was introduced to the rest of North Lanarkshire at the end of last year.
