NLC to introduce code of conduct for staff

NORTH Lanarkshire Council is to introduce a code of conduct for all employees after an internal audit revealed a number of possible conflicts of interest amongst those being paid to provide local services.

These included a headteacher with a relative living at the same address who provides goods to educational establishments and five employees who live at the same address who were also being paid for leases of property which provide homeless accommodation.

The council say no wrongdoing was found but tighter regulations will help clean up red tape.

A spokesman said: "The audit process worked as it should. The examples given in the report were fully and properly investigated and no irregularities were found.

"We are working towards a comprehensive code of conduct which will be presented to committee and will be the subject of discussion with our union representatives."

Audit and governance panel convener Tommy Morgan believes a code of conduct is important to govern properly.

He said: "The councillors have to abide by a code of conduct so it is only right that every other council employee should be subject to similar rules."

The SNP group feel some council employees have already escaped with bending the rules.
