New nursery is planned for Holytown

NORTH Lanarkshire Council has agreed to spend just over £150,000 increasing nursery provision in Holytown.

At the most recent meeting of the learning and leisure committee councillors heard the results of a tender procedure to create a nursery within Christ the King Primary.

It was decided to award a contract worth £150,418 to Tarm Building and Roofing Ltd. The funds will come from the learning and leisure services capital programme 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, with £143,000 being paid in the first year and the balance in the next.

The work comprises adapting rooms for nursery use, new toilets and cloakroom with associated heating, ventilation, drainage and electrics.

At present the only council nursery provision in the village can be found at Holytown Primary, but once the work is finished 20 full-time morning places will be created.

Further plans are also being discussed to extend into the afternoon.

At the same meeting it was decided to allow the mobile library service the use of part of Firpark Primary in Motherwell.

Space was created at the school when it split into two parts with the older pupils moving to the new secondary school in Milton Street.

After a tender procedure a contract worth £168,018.11 was awarded to Maxi Construction Ltd.

The work will involve alterations and adaptations within the existing building to provide three stock rooms, despatch area, staff workroom, staffroom, office and toilets.

Repairs and partial redecoration will also be carried out, while external surfacing to ramps and application of non-slip tactile coatings will be done, plus the installation of new phone and network points will take place.
