Murderer must wait for sentence

Murder victim Graeme Ferry

THE murderer of Bellshill man Graeme Ferry must wait another five weeks to find out how long he will spend in jail.

Garry Smith (34), of John Bowman Gardens, Bellshill, was due to be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh today (Tuesday).

However, the case was put off until July 25 because the judge, Lady Stacey, was unavailable.

Smith appeared at the High Court in Glasgow last month and admitted murdering Mr Ferry (24), of Hooper Place, Bellshill, in April last year then burying his body in a field near Cleland.

Smith also admitted hindering the police investigation into Mr Ferry’s disappearance by pretending the landscape gardener had left Smith’s house unharmed to meet someone in Coatbridge.

Andrew Shilliday (39), of Babylon Road, Bellshill, had his not guilty plea to the murder charge accepted, but admitted helping Smith to cover up the crime.

The pair will return to Glasgow for sentence next month.

Smith faces a life term, but the judge has to decide how long he will stay in jail before he can apply for parole.
