Muir Street reopening
MOTHERWELL’S Muir Street is set to reopen on Thursday following a £1.2 million makeover.
The area has been redesigned with the road reduced to one lane and resurfaced. This has created space for parking, service bays and a taxi rank and has enabled the double kerbs to be removed and the footpaths widened.
Footpaths have been repaved in natural stone, trees planted and new street lighting, seats, bins and bus shelters have been installed.
Extensive work has also been carried out below the road surface to improve drainage and move utility service pipes which has allowed the level of the roads and footpaths to be levelled.
With support from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, the area at the entrance to Motherwell rail station has also been resurfaced and an improved interchange between the rail and bus services created.
Councillor James Coyle, convener of planning and transportation, said: “The redevelopment of Muir Street follows on from the improvements carried out at the top of Hamilton Road and in Merry Street, all of which was designed to create an attractive town centre that welcomes shoppers and visitors.
“Muir Street is a particularly busy area of the town centre and the new layout will improve the amenities for shoppers and people travelling to and from Motherwell by bus and rail.”
