MSP launches furious blast over Raith upgrading snub
UDDINGSTON and Bellshill MSP Michael McMahon has hit out at the Scottish Government for snubbing Lanarkshire for the second time in a month.
In January finance minister John Swinney announced that Edinburgh was being given enterprise zone status instead of favouring Newhouse.
Last week transport minister Keith Brown announced £72 million towards a range of new transport projects across Scotland.
Mr McMahon hoped this might finally see the start of the long awaited Raith Interchange improvements, but was to be left disappointed as the county failed to receive a single penny.
Mr McMahon said: “Looking at the areas which have received money - the north east, the Highlands and the south west - they are traditionally SNP areas, coincidence?
“Coming just a few weeks after Mr Swinney was in Newhouse for the launch of BioCity, only to turn around and award enterprise zone status to Edinburgh.
“And now Mr Brown fails to award us any road cash, I have to feel that Lanarkshire is being snubbed.
“The Raith Interchange was supposed to be completed by 2013, yet I reckon we could be looking at 2018 at the earliest, if indeed the Scottish Government still have any interest in progressing the project.”
The Scottish Government confirmed they still wish to move forward with the Raith Interchange programme.
